I note the solution here in the hope that it is helpful to the next person searching for an answer.<\/p>\n<p><b>The problem:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re running plain Ubuntu installations (gnome) with Kmail (for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kolab.org\/\">Kolab<\/a>). Clicking on links in emails opens a shell window with Lynx and not Firefox.<\/p>\n<p><b>The fix:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Most of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntuforums.org\/showthread.php?t=29824\">search hits<\/a> I found advised me to use kcontrol and go to &#8220;KDE Components -> Component Chooser&#8221;. Well, that <a href=\"https:\/\/lists.ubuntu.com\/archives\/kubuntu-users\/2008-February\/025836.html\">option isn&#8217;t enabled<\/a> in the Ubuntu version of the KDE packages. As I don&#8217;t run the KDE panel, the suggested solution doesn&#8217;t work either.<\/p>\n<p>The solution is contained in <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/kdebase\/+bug\/74283\">these bug tracker messages<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nsudo apt-get install kde-systemsettings<br \/>\nkcmshell defaultapplication\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes I miss the times of simple configuration files.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is one of the simple things which required more searching than I expected.
